Assessment Task 1

There are 2 parts to this Assessment Task

1. Write a reflective journal which explicitly reflects on your workplace experience in terms of on-going performance, development of graduate capabilities (refer to list below) and your understanding of the organisation and its place within the industry sector.
2. Write a journal to reflect on how the code of conduct was embedded into work practices, based on your observations? Give practical examples of policy, procedure and practices.

Comment on communication practices and procedures. (Minimum 1000 words)

To assist with your reflective journal, you should keep ongoing diary notes during your placement to reflect on your experience in the workplace aligned to the above listed learning outcomes and the development of VU graduate capabilities. These capabilities include: 

• Being able to problem solve in a range of settings; 
• Locate, critically evaluate, manage and use written, numerical and electronic information;
• Communicate in a variety of contexts and modes; 
• Work both autonomously and collaboratively; 
• Work in an environmentally, socially and culturally responsible manner; 
• Manage learning and career development opportunities.

Assessment Task 2

An 'Employer Appraisal' that documents tasks performed by you as a trainee during your placement, which assesses those performance elements representing key workplace skills, will be completed by your workplace supervisor. You will meet with your supervisor to discuss your appraisal including areas for improvement. It is expected that performance elements such as co-operation,  presentation and professionalism are rated 'high', however it is expected that some technical aspects to duties undertaken by students during work placements will not be rated very high as this is a learning on-the-job process.

• YOU MUST submit the appropriate documentation from the employer or host organisation (i.e. your Employer Appraisal) demonstrating successful completion of the workplace based activities, within one week of completing your placement.
• Complete a personal Career Professional Development Plan based on your workplace experience and self evaluation of your skills. This evaluation, taking into account your Employer Appraisal, is an opportunity for you to reflect on how your workplace skills have developed and to identify areas for further improvement. Your career plan will outline some short-term goals based on your learning in the workplace experience and related strategies to achieve them. (Minimum 500 words)

Assessment Task 3

Option 1

You are required to observe a new client interview and: 

Prepare a draft file note. This will then be discussed with your workplace supervisor and compared to the official file note that goes in the file. The file notes must be signed off by your supervisor. 

Follow through the file establishment processes and documentation and develop and draw a flow chart of the process, including a description of each step of the process. 

This will then be discussed with your workplace supervisor and compared to the official file note.

Option 2

In the event you are unable to observe a new client interview you may do the following: 

Identify a new client matter.  

1. Follow through the initial file establishment processes and documentation and develop and draw a flow chart of the process, including a description of each step of the process. 
2. Identify and describe an action plan of the proposed steps to be taken with the client and on the matter, including the administrative steps. List any known deadlines and timeline

This needs to be discussed with your workplace supervisor and either be signed off or confirmed in an email by your supervisor.(Minimum 500 words)

Having worked with Mero Consultancy for a considerable amount of time, there are a few observations in order with regard to the workplace experience. On the whole, it has been an extraordinary learning experience both personally and professionally. Despite the initial encumbrances while adjusting in the workplace environment, things have started to settle down. A while ago, the cases, which appeared to be tiresome to handle, have started to appear interesting. This atmosphere of comfort has given a great boost to my job performance. For quite some time now, I have developed a strong understanding of the work culture. This has significantly augmented my skills to deal with the issues that come across my desk. In my last appraisal, I was duly rewarded for my hard work and now, I have become even more motivated to build upon the success. Now, with confidence in expression, I can say that the way forward in this job is going to be more fulfilling for me as I continue to contribute to the success of the organization.

While discussing my performance, it is inappropriate not to reflect upon the progress that I have made in the development of skills. Before starting to work here as a consultant, I had a very simplistic understanding of the job profile of a consultant. I used to think that it wouldn't require much of the interpersonal skills that were emphasized during my education. I thought that during much of work, I would be asked to mechanically apply the legal provisions of Migration law to the cases handled by the organization. However, my entire viewpoint changed towards the work after handling the first assignment given to me. The first task assigned to me gave me a valuable insight into the challenges involved in this job. I realized that the most important aspect of my profile was to address each and every concern of the client. To achieve this client satisfaction, I was convinced that it wouldn't suffice just to apply the law. It is also necessary to understand the expectations of the client and how can my advice be tailored in a way that it is helpful to the client. Now, with some experience in dealing with complex cases, I have made a considerable amount of progress in terms of my interpersonal skills. I consider myself a much more evolved person to handle the problems on my way brought by the clients.

Due to my previous work experience in the service sector, I had certain pre-conceived notions about my organization. Before joining the organization, I had some particular thoughts about the way a consultancy service works. Prior to this job, I used to think that the quantity of the work was the priority of organizations in this sector since there is tremendous competition in this field. However, after spending some time in this job, I have come to realize that the values of this organization priorities the quality of the work over the quantity of work. Therefore, now I can say that my experience in working with Mero Consultancy has completely changed my outlook towards this sector.
