Completing the chapter on Corporate Social Responsibility, made me realize that businesses have many stakeholders, and often society and environment, are the largest stakeholders of all. As nations move towards the path of development, and so do the businesses, there has been an increasing need for them to operate in a way that doesn't harm the surrounding communities.
I have come to realize that when we talk about corporate social responsibility, it is not just about saving the environment, it also includes providing good work conditions to its employees, improving standards of living of the poor communities, following lawful practices. As an individual, I can say that these responsibilities are just not limited to the big mighty corporations, even mid-sized or small organizations can inculcate practices that do not cost intensive.
Recently, I came across what Danone's initiative in Bangladesh. And I find it very interesting, that the firm doesn't put all its money into a black hole in the name of CSR, instead, it has built a very strong and sustainable model driving profits out of it. Elaborating on the example, Grameen Danone Foods Ltd a joint venture of Danone has set up nutrient-rich yogurt producing factories in Bangladesh. Put simply, it provides employment to locals, provides nutritious food to poor kids at a small price, and has increased the standard of living of the people with the help of its technology. In fact, it has become so successful that they would be setting up even more number of manufacturing units there. Now, this is what I call Corporate Social Responsibility.
